What is Lymphedema? Lymphedema refers to swelling most frequently occurring in the arms or legs, but may also occur in the face, abdomen, neck or genitals. Lymphedema is commonly found in individuals that have undergone radiation treatment, when a blockage occurs in the lymphatic system. This blockage prevents lymphatic fluid from draining back into your circulation, resulting in increased swelling. Although there is no cure for Lymphedema, there are several treatments to control the progression.

What are the symptoms of Lymphedema?
Persistent swelling in the body
A feeling of heaviness
Limited motion in the affected body part
Hardening of the skin in the affected area

What is the treatment for Lymphedema?
The treatment focuses on reducing the swelling in the affected body part and maintaining reduction.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle manual massage that activates the lymphatic system.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) consists of two phases. Phase one concentrates on reducing the swelling in the affected area with massage, followed by compression wrapping. Phase two consists of fitting patients with compression garments, which help maintain lymphedema reduction.

When should I see a Doctor?
If you notice persistent swelling in any region of your body you need to be evaluated by a physician.
